The Heart behind the music
Why do I create?
I grew up in Cache Valley, Utah, and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Finance. I’m a pianist, composer, wife, disciple of Christ, and mom of four, and I spend a lot of my life trying to balance beauty with reality—whether that’s at a piano bench or somewhere in the mountains (and sometimes in the laundry mountains).
Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My marvelous mom was inspired to park my high chair next to the piano, and she was patient and consistent as I explored the keys. I grew up playing the piano, accompanying people whenever I could, and eventually realizing that I didn’t just want to play music—I wanted to shape it. Writing music became a way for me to say things I couldn’t always explain and to explore feelings that made my soul soar.
Over time, I caught myself constantly editing the music in front of me. Much to my piano teacher’s dismay, I could never quite play what was written. That frustration nearly became an off-ramp from my piano journey—until a wise teacher lovingly nudged me to start writing the music I heard in my head instead of what was printed on the page. Thank you, Marilyn Hilton.
Over the past 30 years, I’ve played in living rooms, fields, church congregations, plazas, and concert halls. I’ve accompanied more individuals and groups than I can count, and every one of those experiences has shaped my musical voice.
Outside of music, I’m a wife to my best and most patient friend, Jared—my biggest music fan and cheerleader—and we have four amazing kids. I love enjoying the mountains at all speeds—hiking, biking, dirt biking, and camping—along with cooking things that may or may not get eaten, learning new things, exploring new languages, having deep conversations, eating food from my garden, picking its flowers, discovering treasures in the scriptures, and helping my kids grow into beautiful humans.
At the heart of my music is my faith in Jesus Christ. I believe music transcends this world’s communication systems and can share truth and beauty without needing to explain itself. When I write or perform, my primary goal is to use that language to lift, steady, and point hearts toward Him—Jesus. When you listen to, perform, or share my music, let the notes carry more than sound. Let them carry testimony, His light, and the quiet assurance that Jesus Christ is real, powerful, and in relentless pursuit of us.
